Up until now, canine influenza has not been a disease commonly seen in Central Texas. Over the last few weeks there have been many dog’s diagnosed with Canine Influenza. These dogs presented with coughing and respiratory signs. Samples taken have confirmed the affecting agent to be Canine Influenza Virus.

With this new wave of positive infections in sick patients, we are now recommending vaccinating your dogs for Canine Influenza Virus. Initially this is a two injection series given 4 weeks apart, then boostered yearly.

If you have more questions please contact us.

Hi there! I’m Charlie. My foster family says that I’m a neutered male tabby, but I think that’s just human speak for “giant love muffin!” I was born mid to late October of 2010. Life kinda sucked a whole lot back then. See, my foster family had been watching for us. My mama was treated very badly by humans, and then abandoned while pregnant with me and my siblings. She didn’t want humans anywhere near us, so she hid us very, very well! My foster family found us in their field once, but we ran very fast and Mama made us hide somewhere else.

All of my siblings had died by the time my fosters found me. They were hit by cars, or died from illness. My fosters would give each one a little burial when they found them. It was sad, but I was still too scared to accept them.

Then one day, I hurt my leg so very badly! The dogs my foster parents have started barking when they found me. They nudged me with their noses to keep me from trying to get up. I found out later that the puppies were taught to not harm kitties like me. My fosters were shocked to discover what the puppies found. ME! I was hurt, and scared, but still wouldn’t let them near me so my fosters through a towel over my head and picked me up. I went straight to the quarantine cage. I was so scared, I curled up in my litterbox all night long. I had some really stinky poo, but that didn’t matter. The litter was like sand, so it comforted me a bit.

The next day, my fosters took me to the vet. I had stinky poo disease called Coccydia. I also had a really bad bite wound in my leg that sprained it very badly. Vet said it was so bad, it was worse than if I had broken it! I had to stay in a cast for an entire month. I started taking it off on my own after two and a half weeks. My fosters kept taking me to the vet to get it put right back on. I did not like that cast!

Eventually, I was all better. My leg was healed, though it could get reinjured easily. This is why I need to stay inside. That’s okay. I like being an inside love muffin now! Also, the vet thinks I may have an upper respiratory illness called Herpes. My fosters can’t afford the test that will tell us for sure. The vet says though that as long as I stay in a less stress environment, I’ll be just fine. I have special treats I get to eat every single day that helps to build my immune system and keeps me from getting sick.

Right now, I am in quarantine. See, my foster family has 9 other animals right now. I don’t like so many other animals. I like my own living space. I’m cool with just one or two, but 9 is way over the top, even for a kitty like me! I tend to get very insecure when there are so many critters around.

I get along fine with dogs and other cats. Children are cool in my book, but I’ve never been around small children. It’s probably better that I’m not in a home with small kids anyway. I tend to play a bit rough sometimes. I’m not meaning to hurt anyone, but because I grew up outside, I haven’t quite learned how to do things like retract claws and not use teeth when playing.

My foster family loves me very much and wants to keep me. It was hard for them to realize that while I love them too, this just isn’t a good place for me. I need a nice calm environment. I need a home where I can get my lovins anytime that I want them! But mostly, I need a home where I know that I am loved, safe and well cared for. I would like to keep my vet though. See, they have known me for a long time and have my entire history on file. If I get sick or injured in the future, they’d be best able to take care of me.

If you’d like to meet me, and possibly take me home to be your personal love muffin, give my foster mom Dana a call. She’d happily arrange a time and place for us to meet! Her number is 512-213-4401.

Sincerely,

Charlie Darwin
